Unlocking Kaduna Solid Minerals Resources: From Fallow Wealth to $500m Future

By Zubair Abdurra’uf Idris

Kaduna State, long celebrated as Nigeria’s Centre of Learning, is back in the headlines. This time, not for academia alone, but for economics. And the story is big.

Beneath the soil of Kaduna’s 23 Local Government Areas lies a quiet fortune. From the gold fields of Birnin-Gwari to the untapped lithium and rare mineral belts stretching through the Kafanchan-Sanga-Kagoro axis, the state sits on one of the most diversified solid mineral portfolios in the country. Yet for decades, this wealth has remained more promise than practice — an illusion of prosperity while the state, like many others, waited on monthly allocations from the Federation Account.

That narrative is changing. A $500 Million Turning Point.

Today, Kaduna has moved from exploration talk to execution. Governor Uba Sani hosted the President and CEO of the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), Mallam Samaila Zubairu, and his delegation for a strategic engagement that culminated in the signing of two landmark Memoranda of Understanding with a combined investment value of $500 million.

“These agreements mark a significant milestone in our drive to unlock Kaduna State’s vast solid minerals potential and accelerate sustainable economic transformation,” Governor Uba Sani said.

It’s the kind of deal that repositions a state. Not just as a resource owner, but as a serious mining jurisdiction.

The Two Landmark MoUs

1. The Strategic Framework MoU: AFC- KMDC
The first agreement is between the Africa Finance Corporation and the Kaduna Mining Development Company (KMDC). It establishes a framework to identify, develop, and finance high-potential mining assets across Kaduna State.
Critically, it preserves the State’s ownership of its mineral resources while bringing in AFC’s capital, global networks, and project finance expertise. Think of it as the engine room — a pipeline to turn geological potential into bankable projects.

2. The Gidan Waya Project MoU: KMDC- AFC-JRP
The second MoU is more specific and more immediate. It involves KMDC, AFC, and the Jema’a Resource Project (JRP) to advance the Gidan Waya mining project in Jema’a LGA from exploration straight into commercial production.
Here, AFC brings investment capacity. JRP brings technical expertise. KMDC brings state stewardship. The goal: a flagship mine that proves Kaduna can go from discovery to delivery.

What’s Actually In The Ground?
This is where glamour meets geology. Recent exploration and due diligence have confirmed commercially significant deposits that place Kaduna in a league of its own.

The confirmed portfolio now includes: – Platinum Group Metals (PGMs)— a defining moment for Nigeria’s mineral diversification
Gold— already known in Birnin-Gwari, now with clearer commercial pathways
Lithium, Nickel, Copper, Cobalt — the core battery metals powering the global energy transition
Silver and Rare Earth Elements— critical for electronics, defense, and green technologies

For years these deposits lay fallow. Now, with science-driven exploration and institutional backing, they have names, volumes, and investors attached to them.

Governor Uba Sani was clear: this is about more than digging.
“We are positioning Kaduna State as Nigeria’s premier destination for investment through bold reforms, improved security, strong institutions and responsible resource development,” he said.

That positioning is getting noticed. Mallam Samaila Zubairu affirmed that Kaduna is “building the right institutional foundations to attract long-term investment, drive industrial growth and unlock inclusive economic opportunities.”

The Director-General of the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) commended Kaduna as the first state in Nigeria to actively engage the Agency throughout the resource discovery and exploration process, describing its transparent, accountable and science-driven approach as “a model worthy of emulation across the Federation.”

Even the private sector is taking note. Mr. Nere Emiko, CEO of Anka Metals, praised Kaduna’s foresight and consistency, noting that KMDC is the first state-owned mining company in Nigeria to secure an exploration and development partnership with the Africa Finance Corporation.

The ambition here is bigger than royalties. Kaduna is targeting the full value chain: world-class mining infrastructure, local value addition, and globally competitive industries built around its minerals.

The vision is deliberate — create jobs, expand opportunities, and deliver lasting prosperity for the people across all 23 LGAs. Not just in Birnin-Gwari or Jema’a, but across the Kafanchan-Sanga-Kagoro axis and every community sitting on untapped deposits.

“As we embark on this transformative partnership with the Africa Finance Corporation,” Governor Sani invited, “investors, development finance institutions and industry leaders join us in unlocking Kaduna State’s immense mineral wealth.”

The Centre of Learning Becomes the Centre of Industry.

Kaduna has always taught Nigeria how to think. Now it intends to show Nigeria how to build.

With $500 million in MoUs signed, institutional reforms underway, and a mineral basket that reads like a who’s-who of 21st century industry, the illusion is over. The gold of Birnin-Gwari, the lithium of the south, the PGMs and rare earths waiting in the ground — they are no longer just entries in a geological survey.

The Centre of Learning is now set to become the Centre of Resource Industrialization. And this time, the wealth will not be left to lie fallow.
